Cancer is the unrestricted growth of the uncommon cells in the body. It can occur at any part of the body such as from lungs to the breast, from colon to brain, from neck to even blood. The degree of growth in cancers are different for different types of cancers- Some grow rapidly while others more slowly.
Stages of Cancer
There are different stages involved in the spread of the cancer, Generally it is categorized into 4 stages discussed below-
Stage 0 - It is the initial phase where the cancer has not spread and is at the same starting position.
Stage 1- It means that the cancer is small but has not spread.
Stage 2- It means that the cancer has grown and has not started affecting surrounding regions.
Stage 3- It refers to an advanced stage where cancer has become larger and may has started spreading to the surrounding regions.
Stage 4- This stage refers to the position where cancer has at least affected one other body organ, known as secondary or metastatic stage.
Diagnosis of Cancer
There are different types of physical examinations available to diagnose the cancer. These tests may involve blood tests, imaging scans or lab tests. Some of the X-rays are-
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Powerful magnets and radio waves are used to make detailed images of the affected area.
Computerized tomography (CT) scan: Several X-rays are taken from different angles and put together to show more information.
Ultrasound: High-frequency sound waves are used to make images of the inside of your body.
Biopsy- In which a small piece of tissue is taken and looked at under a microscope.
Treatments for Cancer
Surgical- The doctors can perform the surgery to take out the cancer, a process which might involve removing some or all of the body part where cancer has spread. But surgery is not the cure for all types of cancers such as in Blood cancers doctors prefer to use drugs for treatment.
Chemotherapy- It involves the usage of drugs to kill or slow the growth of the infected cells. It can be given orally or through the drip. Since drugs travel to all the body parts, they are useful for Stage 3 and Stage 4 cancers.
Radiotherapy- It is a method in which radiations are used to kill or slow the growth of the infected cells. It is generally combined with chemotherapy to treat the later stages of the cancer. Radiotherapy can be given externally by a machine or internally by introducing a radioactive source into the body in different ways.
